CONFESSIONS OF A DC GEEK #5 – PAUL EDWARDS

First of all, tell me a bit about yourself – name, age (if willing), where you’re from and what you do for a living, anything else you wish to mention.

Hi, I am Paul Edwards, I’m now 39 and live in Hornchurch, Essex and for a living I am a sales executive, selling Lorry parts; plus in my own time I run DC World.

What, or who, helped kickstart your DC Comics fandom and when?

I would say who helped me kickstart me into my Superhero journey, was the legend, Christopher Reeve, of course the ultimate Superman.  This was the first superhero movie I ever saw and was around 1983, and since that day Superman has been my man.

Who is your favourite DC Superhero? – Not sure this needs asking, isn’t it obvious already?

Superman of course, purely as he is the most powerful superhero ever and the most recognised symbol in the world; plus he has the best morals.

Who is your favourite DC Villain?

This would have to be the Joker, purely as he is totally insane and you could never trust him, or work him out.  One minute he’s your pal, then he’d kill you. What an insane and powerful sort of character to have.

Overall, who is your favourite DC character?

Overall I have a few, Superman, Batman and The Flash, all in that order for me.

What is your favourite DC Movie?

This would be the original Superman, but closely followed by Man Of Steel.  Loved the new incarnation massively and the new twist that Zack Snyder has brought us has created a new chapter for fans.

TV shows – which is your favourite DC effort?

Well, starting off I loved Smallville, but with the shows we have today they are all amazing.  The one I do love watching is the Flash.  The fun, the effects and the stories, I still think season one was the best to date, with Reverse Flash, loved it.  This is the one show my family sit and watch together; the rest I have to watch alone.

Is there a DC character, maybe a lesser known one, that you would like to see enter the movie or TV Universe?  If so, who?

Funny this question came up but will say Shazam.  Perfect timing as I think he is overdue an appearance, and now, the movie has started filming.  Think it will be great to see this boy Billy in situations knowing that he can turn into a superhero at any time.

The DC Universe has featured many, many actors on TV and in the movies, as well as animated movies/series’, so I ask you – who is your favourite actor, anyone who has made some sort of appearance within a DC creation?

I will fall away from Superman and pick Batman actor Christian Bale.  I absolutely loved his Batman and what a great trilogy The Dark Knight gave us all.  It was a great cinematic experience seeing these on the big screen.  Hans Zimmer’s score is still Epic.

Comics – do you read them? And if so what is your favourite comic/graphic novel to read?

To be completely honest, with my lifestyle, I have no time for reading the comics, and know a lot of fans know so, so much mythology, it’s insane.  I did read a lot of the Rebirth’s as they started, for about 4 months, and loved them.

Controversial questions:  Superman – Trunks or No Trunks??

I have to say no trunks on today’s versions, but they are an iconic piece of the Superman mythology, so wouldn’t mind them returning soon either.

Now we have the necessities from you, on to the reasons that I created this feature, your DC collectables/memorabilia or whatever you wish to call them.

First up, do you collect large amounts of DC merchandise or is it just a select variety of items that appeal to you, which you like to pick up?

Now we’re talking.  I collect autographs, mainly in person at events.  I love my photos with the actors too.  I also collect statues, figures, merchandise and pretty much anything that takes my fancy, and I’ve also got into buying Funko’s to get signed.  Also love interviewing the actors at events, and YouTubing the videos too.

Do the items you collect relate to one specific character/movie/TV Show etc. or is it just all things DC Comics?

They are all mainly DC Comics, related to actors and merchandising, but I do have a few marvel items, like Stan Lee’s autograph, which I got meeting him in London, along with some others.

Of all the items you own, do you have a most prized possession? – I’m not asking for your favourite here, but the one/s you cherish most of all. Why does it/they mean so much to you?

My most cherished thing is not an item, but has to be when I met the Justice League in December 2017.  I flew to Long Island to meet them at Ace Comic Con.  It was an epic event and it made my dreams come true.   It is not only the photos and autographs I got there, but the special memories I took away from it too  It was possibly the greatest time ever, plus, I got some amazing cast photos too.

Is there something in your collection that you would consider the strangest? If so, what made you buy it?

My strangest item is my Joker apron, which I got in a mystery box from a company.  Never used it yet as I’m not allowed in the kitchen.  I know that feeling – John.

Do you have something in your collection that could be described as a rare item?

Yes.  I have a one-off art piece from Jim Lee of Superman.  It’s bloody epic and an original one.  I won it at Ace Comic Com, where I also got to meet Henry Cavill in a private meet and greet afterwards.

What is the your “go to” item when showing off your collection to, say, friends or family?

Probably my newly added Justice League watch set, by Police Watches; they are sexy as hell and come in a suitcase.  Less nerdy to show family than all my autographs and I love them.

Is there a Holy Grail for you, an item that you would love to own that may prove to be extremely difficult?

That would be a real or replica Superman costume of Henry Cavill’s Superman from Justice League.  I absolutely love it and would love to own one.  What I’d do with it I don’t know but it would certainly turn some heads when I go shopping with my wife.  And I’m sure your wife would go shopping with you wearing that, haha – John

Cheeky question, but most and least expensive collectible you own?

My most expensive item has to be, probably, my Justice League watch set.

My least expensive is a Superman key ring, that was 10p
