Comics:
DC has had a brilliant year for comics, the new 52 ended and DC Rebirth started, Green Arrow and Wonder Woman turn 75 years old and Gerard Way created DC’s Young Animal. Choosing the winner for each category has been hard for this year but all my choices were hard thought-out and hopefully don’t cause too much controversy. This article will be revealing what I loved about DC Comics in 2016 by giving awards out to the best of the best.

Hardcover of 2016:

DC Universe: Rebirth #1 Deluxe Edition.

The DC Universe: Rebirth #1 Deluxe Edition is my favourite Hardcover of the year because the story was wrote by the excellent Geoff Johns, the story follows Wally West as The Flash. Wally is trapped in the speed force and trying to get out, while he is trying to get out he sees a lot of other characters that are in the DC universe and each encounter catches the readers up very quickly showing the readers what has changed slightly since Rebirth allowing new readers to get into Rebirth without having read any of The New 52 titles. In the back of the book there is a lot of special features including character sketches that were not available in the paperback comic version of the book. The book is great for DC veterans and DC rookies. The hardcover is well worth the price and looks nice displayed on a shelf.

Best Writer:

DC’s Very own Young Animal Gerard Way.

I have chosen Gerard Way of my writer of 2016 because of his extraordinary work he has done with Doom Patrol and Cave Carson Has a Cybernetic Eye. Way has brought the weird back to Dc brining Back Cave Carson and The Doom Patrol back. His writing on both titles is very strange but extremely cleaver making each title enjoyable to read and even after I read each other I spent time thinking about what went on during the issue more than I do with any other titles. When Way was first announced to write some books, I was very sceptical but now that I have tried them I realised how great of a writer he actually is. This is why Gerard Way is my writer of the year.

Best Artist:

Nicola Scott.

Nicola Scott has well deserved the award for Best Artist, her art for Wonder Woman is fantastic, she puts so much detail into every face, body and location, she draws an excellent Diana, she doesn’t over sexualize her and Scott makes Wonder Woman look Powerful and an actual warrior. I have never complained once about Nicola Scott’s art because it is just perfect and that makes her my artist of the year.

Cover of the Year:

The Flash Rebirth #9.

The issue that has won Cover of the Year for me is called “Kid Flash of Two Worlds” as the name suggests the cover is homage to the classic cover “Flash of Two Worlds.” The art for the cover is brilliantly drawn by Carmine Di Giandomenico, with the original Wally West on the Right, the new Wally West on the right and Barry Allen on the floor. When I was buying that week’s comics, it was the first one I saw on the shelf, it stood out so much and was the first one I picked up and just looked at the cover for a minute before looking at any other comics. My all-time favourite cover art of any comics is “Flash of Two Worlds” and now this cover comes a close seconds. Making “Kid Flash of Two Worlds” my cover of the year.

Issue of the Year:

Doom Patrol #3. Doom Patrol #3 for me is without a doubt my Issue of 2016, the first time I read it I instantly re read it and was smiling all the way through it. I must have Re read the issue so many times, the story by Way (Author of the Year) is first class, clever and strange. The comic includes homages to classic comic covers but during the panels they appear on the titles have been changed so the story is still being told; the art looks fantastic and is drawn by Nick Derington. His art complements the story perfectly and creates the classic covers so well but he recreates them with a Doom Patrol twist. The rest of the story is excellent, it brings the whole narrative closer together making it still wacky but also making parts of the story make sense to the readers. I would have been happy if Doom Patrol #3 was the only thing I read this year and it just had to be my issue of the year.

Character of the Year:

Wonder Woman.

Wonder Woman is my character of the Year. It has been a great year for Wonder Woman, 75th year anniversary, becoming an honorary ambassador for the UN (but then the role was stupidly taken away for incorrect reasons but I really don’t want to go into details because it just makes me furious.) and the first trailer for the Wonder Woman trailer was released. This year Wonder Woman’s story has been top notch with Rebirth Wonder Woman following two stories. Each story has been so interesting and still intertwined even though the stories take part years apart. I am a huge The Flash fan but Wonder Woman has had such an excellent year and really does deserve to be my character of the year.

Steve Dillon Death.
2016 has been a great year for but it has also been awful with a lot of beloved celebrities dying, when I found out that Steve Dillon had died it really felt like I had been punched in the stomach and the death was so sudden which makes the news even worse, it was such bad news. Dillon was an excellent artist that drew for titles such as Hellblazer and the title he is most known for, Preacher. After Dillon’s death, DC Comics decided to print a tribute for Steve in the back of all the titles in November, When I saw the tribute it made me happy because it looks great and sends the message across that he was a beloved person and an Author.
