DC WORLD REVIEW

What is Harley Quinn The Animated Series? A 13 episode long series focused on Harley Quinn and her friends.

Is this within continuity? No, well not really. This is not the same Harley Quinn you have seen in the animated movie universe. However, the show tries very hard to make this version of Harley Quinn more in sync with the live action version portrayed by Margot Robbie.

Is this show like anything else? Absolutely not. The tone is very well suited to the DC Universe app in line with shows like Doom Patrol and Titans but you have seen nothing like this before in the world of DC Comics. If you are coming to this show expecting a Harley Quinn based Young Justice type show then you will be very disappointed.

Who is this show for? Firstly it is 100% for grown ups. This is not a show to sit down and watch with your young children. Officially this has a 15 rating and it deserves it. There is a whole lot of swearing, sexual double entendre and strong bloody violence. If that is for you, then this show is for you.

Which characters are in the show? The main characters are Harley Quinn, Poison Ivy, Joker, Clay Face, King Shark, Dr Pyscho with a strong supporting cast of Batman and virtually his entire rogues gallery.

Who are the cast? Kaley Cuoco is Harley Quinn, Lake Bell is Poison Ivy, Ron Funches is King Shark, Tony Hale is Dr Pyscho, Alan Tudyk is Joker and Clayface, Chris Meloni is Detective Gordan, Diedrich Bader is Batman, Jason Alexander is Sy Borgman, Wanda Sykes is Queen of Fables and J.B Smoove is Frank the plant

Is it any good? Yes, in my honest opinion it is quite simply brilliant. I was very skeptical when I first learned about this show because when you hear the words “adult based animated Harley Quinn show” who wouldn’t be? As the pieces started coming together, although my expectations remained low glimmers of optimism started to creep in. This was being developed by people who had written shows like Arrested Development, Powerless, Jimmy Fallon and Smilf. Penny from Big Bang Theory was going to be the voice of Harley Quinn. Alan Tudyk and Diedrich Bader came on board as Batman and Joker.

I laughed out loud numerous times during all 13 episodes. The last animated show I remember laughing this much at was early seasons of Family Guy. The show is genuinely funny on many levels. It explores relationships, sexuality, good vs evil and questions the morality of people in powerful positions. It does all that in humorous and grotesque ways whilst covered in a DC Comics skin and full of movie and TV Easter eggs.

Do you like DC Comics? Do you like silly comedy that makes fun of itself? If you answer yes to both those questions then you will enjoy this show.
