Set For Release In June 2021

Welcome to a new feature at Dc World called ‘Franchises’. I decided that I wanted to diversify on what I write about for DC World. Being a fan of different genres of movies and television, that are not necessarily DCU based. Hence why I am writing about my excitement in the next and possibly final instalment of Jurassic World.

Welcome To Jurassic Park

For some reason I felt compelled to write about this exciting piece of news. Jurassic World 3 will start filming in February at Pinewood Studios. This evidence came to light when director, writer and executive producer Colin Trevorrow posted on his Twitter feed. Bryce Dallas Howard was also present in the photograph as she was there for a costume fitting for the yet to be titled Jurassic World instalment. Chris Pratt has just wrapped on his latest movie ‘The Tomorrow’s War’ which also stars Yvonne Strahovski and J.K. Simmons. There was also confirmation in 2019 that most of the Jurassic Park/ World cast favourites will return Including Sam Neill, Laura Dern, Jeff Goldblum, BD Wong, Justice Smith and Daniella Pineda.

I also know I am not alone in my love for this franchise, yes I love all the 5 films that have been released in different ways. It’s difficult to know where to start? With the books written by the late acclaimed author Michael Crichton or the moment I sat down in the Odeon cinema back in the summer of 1993, absorbing the exciting energy of the audience awaiting for this cinematic ground breaking film to start. Director Steven Spielberg has immense talent for bringing the most fascinating stories alive and making them a visionary cinematic experience. One thing I do remember fondly is how noisy the film was, in fact ear bleeding and how quiet the dialogue was when the actors delivered their lines. Jurassic Park was jaw dropping. It had genuine thrills, suspense, comedy and you left the cinema asking a lot of questions, “can velociraptors really use door handles?”

Whilst researching for this article I was interested to see which of the films had taken the most at the box office. I naturally thought Jurassic Park ($1.03 billion) as it was the first in the franchise. But it was in fact Jurassic World the fourth film taking a sweet 1.672 billion USD. Now, is this down to a new generation of fans? Or because a certain Mr Chris Pratt was the one of the lead’s along with the extremely talented Ms Bryce Dallas Howard. Rewatching the trailer of Jurassic World certainly makes the hairs stand up on your arms, hearing the familiar orchestrated music of the main theme made me emotional but seeing how they have progressed from Park to world definitely got me to the cinema on opening night.

The creditably of the science in Jurassic Park alone makes you believe that the finding of Dino DNA inside a mosquito that had extracted blood from a dinosaur, fell asleep and got trapped by tree sap, also known as amber. Passed on to Jurassic Park scientists and genealogists they added Amphibian DNA and then you get baby dinosaurs. I think you can actually forgive John Hammond for thinking he was doing the right thing by bringing back these extinct species. One thing for sure Jurassic Park made the general public go back into museums, more documentaries appeared on televisions discussing the species and how they became extinct. Also people generally became even more intrigued about natural history.

“Life Finds A Way”

Dinosaurs became extinct 66 million years ago but thanks to history documentation and Palaeontologists patiently discovering and digging up their fossils we know a lot about the different species that walked the earth, swam in oceans and flew freely in the skies. So you can completely understand when Dr Alan Grant played by the sublime Sam Neill and Dr Ellie Sattler played by the equally talented Laura Dern, when they get approached by John Hammond played by the late engaging Lord Richard Attenborough to visit his new attraction before it opens. They are some what intrigued but concerned at why they are being removed from their current dig site to islands of the coast of South America. Hammond also invited along Dr Ian Malcolm a mathematician who is an expert in ‘Chaos Theory’ played by acting royalty Jeff Goldblum, who made a great protagonist. But it was the blood sucking lawyer, Gennaro played by Martin Ferrero, who was the most enthusiastic about a dinosaur theme park. But he did get eaten by the T. Rex whilst hiding in a toilet (I bellied laughed at that part). Amongst the action and thrills the most important scene I think is the lunch scene as the experts are honest in what John Hammond has created. Species have been brought back from extinction and they are probably confused in what time and climate they are alive in. Ellie (Laura Dern) makes a compelling case about the plants that are growing around the park as half of them poisonous and no one would know. And how could they know anything about an 100 million year old extinct eco-system. The line delivered by Dr Ian Malcolm “Your scientists were so preoccupied whether or not they could they didn’t stop and think if they should.” Is a powerful moment in the meaning of how we act on something.

From Park To World

There was a fourteen year gap between the releases of Jurassic Park III and Jurassic World, but it’s 22 years after the original park failed to open. The main synopsis of Jurassic World is that the park now open, visitors to the island of Isla Nublar are staring to decline. So with new genetics the owners want and need a new attraction. A hybrid is created called the Indominus Rex, she is cunning and knows how to lure people into her holding area. Claire Dearing (Bryce Dallas Howard) is the manager and she has to keep the investors happy. Claire also has to keep an eye on her two nephews that have been sent to visit her. Owen Grady (Chris Pratt) has been training four velociraptors and gaining their trust especially lead female,Blue. InGen head of security Vic Hoskins (Vincent D’Onofrio – another amazing actor) sees the potential in raptors in how they could be used used in the military. Sure enough the plot of the film would always make you assume kind of dinosaur escape with chaos and destruction. But the surprising part of the new Jurassic World films were the genuinely interesting characters and the horror element, especially Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom.
Owen Grady (Chris Pratt) riding his motorcycle through the forest of Isla Nubla with the four raptors was pretty badass, as they hunted down the Indominus Rex. Claire Dearing (Bryce Dallas Howard) has to be commended for running in high heel shoes as she entices the Tyrannosaurus Rex out of its enclosure. Our famous T-Rex actually becomes the hero of the film and successfully along with Blue. As the survivors manage to get on a boat of the island Isla Nublar. Again the park has failed and the dinosaurs are left free to roam the island again. What will be their future?

“You know me Blue”

When the trailer dropped for Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom it immediately had a different tone and feel. Director J.A. Bayona is known for his horror, high intense drama and I knew him from directing a couple episodes of the excellent of Penny Dreadful. Fallen Kingdom definitely has a darker horror element. Even though the films are aimed at families I would be cautious in how sensitive a child is before actually watching.

Claire Dearing character has completely changed her opinion on how dinosaurs should be treated. From a business woman where she had to market them so people would visit. Claire has become a fully involved in saving the dinosaurs as Isla Nublar volcano is now active and they are facing extinction, again. Whilst our velociraptor trainer Owen Grady, is quite happy building his home in the California wilderness. He thinks the dinosaurs should not be saved.

We also get a nice extra back story about John Hammond and how he created Jurassic Park with another scientist Benjamin Lockwood (James Cromwell) his granddaughter Maisie (Isabella Sermon) plays a very important part in the story of this film and I would think possibly the next instalment. It is possible that Lockwood’s granddaughter has Dino DNA in her genetics as she was cloned by Lockwood as his daughter tragically died.

It’s definitely a bold move in the story to actually blow up the island so the Jurassic story isn’t no longer based on Isla Nublar. Jeff Goldblum makes a welcome return. Doctor Ian Malcolm is in court and giving his expert opinion at a hearing if the dinosaurs should be saved. Malcolm has always been anti bringing the dinosaurs back from extinction as nature selected them into extinction and now a volcano will wipe them out again. Ian Malcolm sees this as another act of god making them extinct.

Velociraptors, I think are more famous as species after Jurassic Park. Pack animals that hunt together, acute sight and smell with land speed up to 40mph in short bursts. The relationship between Owen and Blue is potent story throughout the last two films. Owen refuses to return to Isla Nublar to help Claire save the remaining dinosaurs. When Blue’s name is mentioned it does get Owen thinking about seeing her one last time. Rewatching his video diaries in how they interacted, Blue as a young raptor showed empathy and made the others youngsters wait in formation. Blue was definitely Owen’s Beta as he was her Alpha.
Of course with Blue being unique and last surviving raptor they need her alive. Scientist Dr.Wu (BD Wong) has been working at the Lockwood estate deep beneath the grounds, genetically making a new dinosaur. Eli Mills (Rafe Spall) plays a great villain as he just sees dollars sign as he plans to auction the rescued dinosaurs. The Indoraptor is the new creation and it’s terrifying. Ted Levine (Buffalo Bill-Silence of the Lambs) definitely needs a special mention as his character Ken Wheatley was a trophy hunter and I really did despise him.

Jurassic World 3

So what will happen? What will the title be? Will it be confirmed that Maisie Lockwood has got Dino DNA? How have the human population coped living with dinosaurs? Have the dinosaurs adapted living in the 21st century?

Director Colin Trevorrow has confirmed it won’t be a human versus dinosaur war. The trilogy has indicated all along that weaponising the dinosaurs for war could be part of the plot. How will Owen Grady and Claire Dearing connect with well known characters that are returning for this instalment? Finally will InGen finally listen to Malcolm, Grant and Sattler in what they have to say?

Jurassic World 3 is due in cinemas June 2021.
