Hello Bat-Fans!  For your perusal, we have our latest edition of Confessions of a DC Geek.  I know it’s been a couple of months since our last edition but hey, good things come to those who wait, and that includes you DC World readers and DC Fans.

In this edition we have been putting the questions to Jacqueline Ditcher, DC Fan and a quite wonderful artist (trust me, you’ll see when we reach the questions about her collection).  Jacqueline has therefore confessed all, and has given us a quite wonderful read, which I am sure you will all agree.

And so, on with it, thanks for reading and if you would like to take part in a future edition, then please see the details at the bottom.

JH @DCW: First of all, would you mind telling me a bit about yourself – name, age (if willing), where you’re from and what you do for a living, anything else you wish to mention?

JD: My name is Jacqueline Ditcher but I am known online by my art name Jelowe Art.

I am 33 years old. I am a self-employed massage therapist which is my livelihood, but people know me online for my artwork. I do chalk and charcoal portraits.

What, or who, helped kick-start your DC Comics fandom and when?

I have loved superheroes quite literally for as long as I remember as I grew up watching the animated shows on TV. I also would watch Dean Cain and Teri Hatcher every Saturday morning in Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman when it was first aired back in the 90’s, which I never missed an episode of.

Who is your favourite DC Superhero and why?

BATMAN! Not really sure why. My earliest superhero memories are of him. I guess as he was just a man who seemed to do these incredible things, fighting bad guys in the depths of night, he really appealed to me. That and I have always loved vampires = bats = there’s a connection.

Who is your favourite DC Villain, why so?

Difficult question. I think Lex Luthor because he is just a human being who is the ultimate enemy of the ultimate being (Superman). Even though he is a bad guy it shows that no matter what, humans will keep fighting and can be formidable.

Away from the two mentioned above, who is another character you could call a favourite, villain/hero/other character or one of each, what is the reason they are so great to you?

Superman has always been my second favourite superhero. Maybe because I grew up watching him on TV after Batman, maybe because he is the opposite to Batman – Night/Day – Dark/Light – Black/Colour – Human/Non-human – Gotham/Metropolis – Living in the past (grievance)/living in the future (hope). Maybe because he represents the freedom of imagination and that anything can be possible.

My other favourite villain is Michelle Pfeiffer’s Catwoman. Again, I grew up watching her and to see a curly-haired blonde woman doing all those acrobatics, kicking guys asses and looking awesome while doing it… well….

TV shows – which is your favourite DC effort, past or present?

Favourite TV show….. tricky one…. Yes Gotham is great, Yes Arrow is awesome, Yes The Flash is fun, yes I am using alliteration, but I think really for me it’s Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman because I grew up with it. It has great sentimental value and has a really nice positivity to it that I enjoy. I never seem to get tired of the episodes.

What is your favourite DC Movie?

A question I have asked myself many times…. I still can’t decide. I love Michael Keaton as Batman, I love Christian Bale as Batman, I love Christopher Reeve’s fun light-heartedness in Superman… I just don’t have one film in particular I love above the others…. Apart from maybe Batman: The Movie starring Adam West, because let’s face it…. Some days you just can’t get rid of a bomb.

The DC Universe has featured many, many actors who have appeared on TV and in the movies, not forgetting a wealth of voice actors who lend their skills to animated movies/series’, so I ask you – who is your favourite actor, anyone who has made any kind of appearance within a DC creation?

Christian Bale! He has been one of my favourite actors for over half my life now and I was so happy when I read that he was going to play my favourite Superhero – Batman. LOVE LOVE LOVE!

This editions’ BIG question/s:

BIG Q1).  The Gotham Finale – Now, opinions on this have been mixed, from it being a wonderful love letter to the fans to those who saw it as quite weak and that it would have been better had it ended at the penultimate episode, because that felt like more of an end to the show than the one viewers were treated to.  I probably know the answer to this, but what are your thoughts?

I have mixed feelings to be honest so without going into loads of depth, I’ll just leave that there. It is what it is, I’m ok with it.

BIG Q2).  You will no doubt be aware that Batwoman is hitting our screens soon, with Ruby Rose in the lead role.  We are therefore going to see Gotham City on the small screen again; how do you feel about what might be with this show, are you excited for it or a little indifferent towards it?  Obviously, this is only based on the teaser we have seen

I personally am really looking forward to it. The teaser looks great and Ruby Rose has the athletic and martial arts ability to do a really good job of it. I wish it all the best and eagerly await its arrival.

DC vs Marvel – Social media seems to be a hotspot for this kind of talk, however, at times, it can get out of control and comments can become quite malicious (from both sides I might add); what are your thoughts on the whole DC vs Marvel issue, or do you feel that there should be no issue and, as Joker said in Batman ’89, “Why can’t we all just get along?”

I just love superheroes, I don’t care which universe they come from, it just so happens that my favourite 2 are from DC, but I also love the X-Men and all the rest.

If you were to fall in a swamp/be electrocuted/fall in a vat of chemicals/witness the death of a loved one etc. and made the choice to become superhero or villain, what would your name and powers be and what sort of costume would you go for?

LOL. Ermmm….. I’d probably dress a bit like Batgirl but have the powers of Supergirl, and go around giving people their comeuppance. Name – Dark Karma. (Love it – John)

Apparel – do you wear any clothing that relates to DC Comics and its Universe?  If so, do you have a favourite item of clothing that is still worn aplenty?

I have quite the collection of superhero t-shirts. Yes I tend to wear them on my days off. I am most partial to my black Batman V Superman logo t-shirt and my Gal Gadot, Wonder Woman logo t-shirt.

Conventions – do you attend them and, if so, do you have a favourite convention that you have been to?

I have been to a few, I loved Heroes & Villains last year as I got to meet Cory Michael Smith and Robin Lord Taylor, I think they are the best choice of actors for their characters in Gotham. I also got to meet Stephen Amell and Brandon Routh, they are all so lovely! I have also been to a few others in London and Collectormania in Birmingham, Wales Comic Con…. I don’t have a favourite.

Before we go on to questions regarding your collection, if happy to do so, could you please tell our readers where we may find you online (Twitter, YouTube, Blogs etc.)?

I am on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and on Etsy. I can be found on all of them with @JeloweArt

Now we have your confessions of all things DC, I’d like to ask about your DC collection.

First up, do you collect large amounts of various and random DC merchandise or is there a single type of item that you enjoy picking up more than others?

I only really have my T-shirts. I create my own other merch 😉

Do the collect items that are specific to a character/movie/TV Show etc. or is it all things DC Comics?

Superheroes in general, bit of Buffy and Terminator too.

Thinking about the items you own, do you have a most prized possession?  One that you cherish most of all; why does it mean so much to you?

That’s easy, I have 3 out of the 4 autographs I can get on my Superman collage I drew. I have Dean Cain, Tom Welling and Brandon Routh, I just need to get Henry Cavill. I can’t get Christopher Reeve or George Reeves sadly. This was my first collage drawing and colour drawing, so having it signed as well, it means a lot to me.

Do you have something in your collection that could be described as a rare item?  If so, what is this rare item?

My artwork! I’ve only done one of each and they are signed by the actors themselves so they are all one of a kind.

When you want to show off your collection, what is you “go to” item?

My Superman Collage is on display in my lounge along with my Terminator Collage for all my friends and family to see.

Going back to conventions again, if you attend, what sort of merchandise do you like to pick up, or do you prefer getting to meet the celebs and receive photos/autographs etc?

I go to get my artwork signed. As they tend to cost so much, I only get the autographs of those I have drawn and get photos as proof that I really did meet them and it is really their signatures on my work.

What is the most/least expensive/valuable item that you have purchased to add to your collection?

The most expensive and valuable will be my autographed portrait of Jason Momoa as Aquaman, as long as he doesn’t cancel in July! It’s an A1 size portrait and his autograph and photo is expensive so that will be very valuable.

Is there a Holy Grail for you, an item that you would love to own that may prove to be extremely difficult or even impossible to obtain?

I want to draw a Batman Collage and get all the actors to sign it. That would be amazing.

Finally – away from your confessions and collection, what are your hopes going forward for the world of DC Comics?  Please feel free to write about all mediums (TV/Movies/Comics etc.) that you wish.

Difficult question. I guess I personally would like to see more individual films made like Wonder Woman, Man of Steel etc but see the characters overlap in each other’s films. Keeping the universe open and not restricted with an end in sight, as this means the characters can always go on to fight another day, and keep hope alive which is what they are all about.

There we have it, a wonderful Confession Session.  My thanks go to Jacqueline for agreeing to take part and confess all, a thoroughly enjoyable read and some cracking photos which I really do appreciate seeing, as I am sure all our readers do too.

And so, if you would like to follow Jacqueline and confess all your DC sins, the please do get in touch via Twitter @JH_ComicBookMan / @_DCWorld.  We look forward to hearing from you.
