New York Comic Con 2017: The Gotham Panel

New York Comic Con arrived again for another year at the Javits Centre between 5-8 October 2017. The Warner Brothers Television Takeover happened across the road at the Hammersmith Ballroom. At 3:45pm EST 15 members of Gotham took to the stage to talk about the upcoming episode of Gotham and what to expect from the rest of season 4. Damien Holbrook was the Gotham panel host, which I was please to see as he did the Gotham panel at PaleyFest NY,  I really like his direction with questions and the time he allows the cast members to talk. The panel started with a presentation of a sizzle reel which recapped season 4 so far, ending with Ra’s al Ghul and Barbara Keen with a freaky creepy new character called Dog Boy. The scene will feature in this weeks episode which airs on Thursday 12th October, this episode has been written by Ben McKenzie and directed by Kenneth Fink. This is exciting news as Ben McKenzie’s director debut was excellent in season 3 and Kenneth Fink directed my favourite episode from season 2 “Mommy’s Little Monster.”

I have put together some of the highlights from The Gotham Panel. The next episode is called “The Demon’s Head” which will focus on Ra’s al Ghul. Ben McKenzie was still writing the episode  whilst getting married and being on honeymoon with Morena Baccarin ( Lesley Thompkins ). Ben explained that the process of writing the episode took a few months. The walls of Gotham are closing in during season 4.

David Mazousz ( Bruce Wayne) said he had so much fun playing Billionaire Brat Bruce. There definitely will be a Bat – Cat connection which David was very enthusiastic about. David also mentioned he recently watched Batman Forever to study up and still reads a lot of comics. Camren Bicondova ( Selina Kyle ) feels that Barbara and Tabitha are mom and Dad but Selina is very much the real aldult in the room. Camren made it clear that Selina is only looking out for herself and isn’t really concerned what Bruce is up. Also billionaire brat Bruce was just a taster of what is to come. David mentioned a sequence they have filmed for episode seven and he said it’s was the best fun ever, best nine hours he has ever filmed. David also feels the theme to season 4 of Gotham is control and how to protect the Gothamites and every one has their way. Gordon has his idealistic way, Penguin has pax penguina way and Bruce is going to come up with his way.

Sean Pertwee ( Alfred Pennyworth) confirmed that we get to see a side of Alfred that we have never seen before. He will unravel very quickly and it ain’t going to be pretty. Sean Pertwee felt that his characters  defining moment was loving someone so much you allow them to kill you.

Donal Logue ( Harvey Bullock) talked about Bullocks decision in siding with the GCPD instead of going with Gordon in episode 2. Bullock has seen Gotham for a long time, he lost Falcone, Marconi, Fish Mooney, so the underworld he understood is gone and it’s going beyond good and evil. So going along with Penguin will mitigate some of the damage that has already been done and saving some cops lives. This will be the first time we see Jim and Harvey on a collision course where they cannot work it out and causes a rift between them.

Robin Lord Taylor ( Oswald Cobblepot) mentioned if Bruce wants to be the man he wants to be he is going to have to confront everyone. Batman has ultimate control of the city but it’s going to be a fight, lessons will be taught. Robin also mentioned Penguin’s main adversary this season is Jim Gordon, as neither of them want chaos but both want control. Robin discussed during the Q&A with the fans that trying to murder someone in Gotham is a positive thing “you tried to kill me so you care.”

Crystal Reed ( Sofia Falcone) will meet the Penguin for the first time in episode 4. Sofia needs Penguin for a mysterious purpose. Even though the death of Sofia’s brother Mario has not been discussed with Jim, Crystal as an actress she is using that emotion in her character. Sofia’s feelings for Jim are real but not exactly sure what feelings exactly!

You may not recongise Lee when she returns, she will show up in a fight club. She has changed a great deal since the virus and she couldn’t stay away from Gotham. Lee doesn’t want to come back to the GCPD but she starts working in a underground society called The Narrows. She is there to try and help people as the best she can. Morena  Baccarin would not say any more. But Lee does finally get her chance to deck Barbara Keen.

Chris Chalk ( Lucius Fox) we will definitely see how the relationship with Bruce develops and how he will keep the masked vilgilante safe, it his main objective. It’s very important to keep Thomas Wayne’s son a saint. Lucius will become more involved in the technical side as well.

Cory Michael Smith ( Edward ‘The Riddler ‘ Nygma ) when he watched the scene where Oswald freaks out because Ed has gone from his ice prison Cory absolutely loved it he loved the reaction. Robin commented that he screamed so loud he nearly passed out and saw stars. Cory commended the writers this season.

Erin Richards ( Barbara Keen) is back with a more zen like look on her world. She has got a different kind of way of moving through the world but you will see she still got the some of the old Barbara inside of her. Barbara is approaching Gotham in a bit more like a business woman now because she learned a lesson she just can’t be crazy because her best friend Tabitha won’t put up with it, she needs family, she needs Tabitha, she needs Selina to create safety around her even though she has new skills.

Jessica Lucas ( Tabitha Galavan ) is smart enough to realise she needs allies and that Barbara and Tabitha are stronger together then they are apart. When Tabitha sees Butch as Grundy she is delighted then horrified!

Drew Powell (Soloman Grundy ) feels that Butch is still somewhere in there, but he doesn’t remember anything, so his team up with Nygma who Butch hated, is so much fun to see these two teaming up. When people of Gotham who knew Butch, see him as Grundy they will be shocked.

Alexander Siddig ( Ra’s al Ghul ) the people he comes into contact will realise Ra’s is insane to late. He explains to Bruce very carefully what his intentions are and starts to exercise those plans. Some of the motives he is keeping to himself, but Barbara is the most useful persuasive ally Ra’s could find at the top of the show. Alexandar thinks it very exciting relationship especially when they doing the martial arts together.

The Gotham panel rounded up with questions from the audience and another sizzle reel which they called the Penguin rap containing scenes from episode 4.

The Flash : Season 4 Episode 2 ‘Mixed Signals’

The Flash is back and in Mary Jane’s absence i’ve got the honour of writing the review on this week and next week’s episodes.

This week’s Flash was all focused around relationships as Barry & Iris had relationship problems and so did Cisco and Gyspy (surely this theme would have been better saved for Valentine’s week..but hey!.)

The Flash has always had a lighthearted feel about it in comparison to the likes of Arrow but this season so far feels very fluffy and not quite as much grit as we might expect from a super hero TV series.

However there were some pretty cool parts to this episode as the team juggled their relationship issues with saving Central City.  This week’s villain was Killg%re, pronounced Killgore, who had a vendetta against some people he was working on a project with who sold him down the river to take his profit.  Killgore had the power to mind control anything technology based,  he had technology in his genes – pretty cool!

As we have seen already, Cisco has overloaded Barry’s suit with some awesome tech – but it was all a bit Iron Man and it seems like it wont last long this series.  Killgore was able to mind control Barry’s costume and shut down his ability to move, locked him in the suit and started the self destruct mode (who would put that in a costume, really?)

Barry was yet again able to save himself by throwing a bolt of lightning at himself, which cut off the technology’s electricity supply.

Meanwhile within all the drama, Barry and Iris had a few meetings at a relationship councillor.   It was a lot of nothingness as Iris exploded and they had a conversation and now everything happy and Barry & Iris will live happily ever after.

I’d give this week’s episode a solid 6/10, it was pretty cool with what was going on with Killgore and the biggest story-line that is coming with ‘The Thinker’ seems to be on the verge of setting off pretty soon.  However, the scenes with soppy love interests and counselling just feel not superhero-ey at all.  This is early on in the series and we are still building up, Flash always get better as the series goes on, so here’s to Episode 3!

Hall of Fame : October Semi Finalist 3 – Mark Hamill as Trickster/Joker

It’s that time of the month again, and we at DCWorld are launching the semi-final for September’s HOF chapter.  Here is the third entrant for the October Hall of Fame, Mark Hamill.

Mark Hamill is most famous for his role in Star Wars, but has also been a big hit in the DC universe, the original Trickster in the 90’s version of The Flash and returning again as The Trickster in the current season of The Flash.

Not only known as The Trickster, he is also very well known for his role as Joker which started in the animated series back in 1992.

Also a Star Wars legend, Mark is very well known amongst the ‘comic con’ generation and is totally deserving of being a member of the Hall of Fame.

Are you a fan of DC Comics?  Do you think Mark Hamill deserves to join Jackie Earl-Haley & Robin Lord Taylor in the Hall of Fame final in December? You can vote in October’s Hall of Fame semi-final here.  Every vote counts so make sure you have your say!

Legends of Tomorrow Season 3 Episode 1 – Aruba Con

Legends of Tomorrow is back and boy are we glad to see our hell raising, unlikely team back on our screens.

The episode started in 2017, where time was broken as per the previous episode, the last in the season just gone.  T-Rex’s were running amok and citizens were scared for what was to come!

We got to see Sarah Lance working in a department store.  Here she was throwing knifes at things, as she always does.  My particular favourite part of these scenes was when she threw the knife at the loser Shop Manager, he had that coming!

We also saw Nathan Heywood as the ‘second favourite’ super hero in Central City – hey he stated that himself, i wouldn’t even rate him at second with Kid Flash & Vibe ruling the roost there!

In Silicon Valley we saw Ray Palmer trying to put across how his shrinking technology was the next big thing – but got shot down with the guy he was talking to declaring, ‘if it’s not on a phone it’s not the next big thing’.

Meanwhile, Mick Rory was soaking up the sun in Aruba, and of course – he was the first one to get in on some drama when Julius Caesar himself came strolling across the beach – time is certainly broken!

Everybody was failing at life since the ‘Legends’ disbanded it was evident that they all wanted to get the band back together, even if it was only 6 months apart.  I mean hey, if Take That can get back together, why not the Legends…It only takes a minute, girl!

Back to the story and Rory had called up the Sarah and told them what he had found.  Sarah then gathered the team back together to go to Rip Hunter’s Time Bureau to tell them of Rory’s find.  Of course the stuck up jackasses that work there couldn’t believe it – and thought they’d been proved right when Mick turned up with a kid dressed as Julius Caesar.

The team really needed to prove a point to Rip (Did they? who care’s what Rip thinks?) and so they stole the Waverider from the Time Bureau (now being used as a training console no less) and went to Aruba Con to find the REAL Julius Caesar.

They did catch him, but in true Legends style, some drama and catastrophe had to happen first.    The usual oh no he’s got away, oh yes we’ve caught him again filled up at least 10 minutes of the show and if i’m honest – i did find this very cheesy and a waste of my viewing time.  Yes, Legends is lighthearted, but it would be lovely if it wasn’t so darn predictable all the time!

Again we had a bit more of this when the Legends took Julius back to his own time, only for him to steal a book about the Roman Empire and change the future, with Caesar ruling everywhere.

That didn’t last long, and after yet another catastrophe of the Time Bureau’s Agent getting kidnapped, Sarah saving her and then everything being fine and dandy the episode was over.

The episode started solid, and got weaker as it went on.  Not to say I didn’t enjoy it because I did, but the predictability of Legends does get a bit tiresome at times.

The most notable moment of the episode for me was the part where Martin and Jefferson were talking, Martin wasn’t sure about coming back to the team but Jefferson feels that its now his home.  Martin was willing to give up his dreams of being a grandfather to be with is other family, the legends!

Sidenote here but, there have been rumours recently that Martin is going to leave Legends this series, possibly to do with Victor Garber staring in the new Seth Macfarlane show, The Orville.

So far, so good for Legends of Tomorrow.  It didn’t feel as good as previous series, i’m not sure how they can beat the likes of Vandal Savage from Season 1 personally, but i’m very excited to see what unfolds in the upcoming episodes.

With the stars such as Constantine and Kid Flash featuring this series, and i’m sure many more surprises, the series can only get better as it goes on!

The Flash Season 4, Episode 1 Recap: The Flash Reborn

“We back baby!” Say no more Cisco, say no more.

The Flash returned with a thrilling Season 4 opener. Well, except for the part where we flashbacked to last season’s finale. Thanks for reminding us how much of a bummer that was and breaking our hearts all over again.

During Iris’ opening voiceover, did anyone else think for a flash second that it was her zooming through the city? No? Just me? OK. Fine. That would have been awesome though, seeing Iris in a Flash suit zipping through Central City!

But it’s just Wally (Kid Flash), oh and Cisco (Vibe), oh here comes Joe too. All three in pursuit of Peek-a-Boo, making her grand entrance on screen with a little surprise and delight double hook, knocking out Team Flash during what seems to be amateur hour. Too harsh? Sorry, maybe I just really miss The Flash. Nevertheless, the opener was very exciting with a speedster vs teleporter rooftop chase, accompanied by some sweet special effects. Let’s not forget Iris (the love of the love of our lives). It was enjoyable to see Iris take on a Felicity/Oracle type of role, adding her own spunk and vigour. I do recall her promising The Flash she’d keep running. Seems she didn’t even make it past S.T.A.R Labs. We don’t blame you, Iris. We would’ve done the same thing.

Kudos to the show for putting the spotlight on Iris at the beginning of the season. We got a glimpse into her life after she lost Barry to the Speed Force. From sleeping on the couch, to a photo frame face down, it was clear that after 6 months, Iris was not OK. None of us are OK. Flash where are you?!

They don’t give us much time to grieve, as an electric blast whooshes through Central City and Holy Ronin it’s a Samurai with jet pack wings! A ROBOT SAMURAI, dammit. If you’re into the comics, then you’ll know this is no ordinary Samurai, this is a Samuroid. Created by Baron Katana and first introduced in The Flash #180 issue. Inner geek screaming internally. But of course our new favourite villain has one demand, “bring me The Flash or else your city falls.” Shortly after, sending an electric blast through the ground with his Katana Sword then activating his wings and jetting off into the distance. Now that’s how you make an exit!

OK Flash, you can come back now. Oh, but wait, Cisco has a plan brewing and Iris is not on ‘Team Cisco’ for this one. Avoiding the possibility that Barry may or may not be brought back, Iris urges Team Flash to find other ways of taking down the Samuroid. However, there is no stopping Cisco, who is hell-bent on bringing back our favourite speedster. This means getting Caitlin Snow (who was expecting him) back on board. Yes, Team Flash is slowly coming together again. And don’t think we didn’t notice that sneaky reveal of a few Arrow characters who helped Cisco brew his plan. This obviously means they survived the explosion on Lian Yu!

In the spirit of bringing back old friends, we are presented with the Speed Force Bazooka. Yippee-Ki-Yay, let’s bring Barry back! OR let’s give the Quark Sphere a whirl and open up a portal downtown where a wild Flash suddenly appears, unbeknownst to the rest of the group. Conveniently, Iris shows up right after the plan seems to have ‘flopped’. HOW CONVENIENT. But, don’t worry Iris, you can thank your lucky stars that a butt-naked, bearded Barry Allen has appeared. I mean, he may not be himself, but he’s back. Certainly not the lively Barry we’re used to. Now he talks gibberish, writes wacky symbols on essentially any wall he can find and has not a clue in the world who Iris is. Hit us right where it hurts why don’t you (I’m looking at you Flash writers)!

How do we bring Barry back? Two words, Lady Gaga. We Flash fans appreciate this homage to the pilot. Well played. Unfortunately, even Gaga is not enough to save Barry, so back he goes to being contained while they evaluate the situation. But, do not fret, Iris West has a plan and it involves three little words; “come get me”, she says from outside the cortex.

Iris confidently turns herself over to the Samurai. Which causes a panicked Joe to plead with Barry to snap out of it. After a couple of desperate attempts, Joe finally convinces Barry that Iris will die if he doesn’t snap out of the funk he’s in. A rapid electric jolt in the right eye and WE BACK BABY! The Flash zips through The Cortex, taking the new suit with him and racing after the flying Samurai carrying a damsel in distress. Or more like a damsel with a good play. Zipping through a wind farm, he saves his damsel and unveils the Samurai to be a robot, that was controlled by The Thinker. I have a feeling we’ll be seeing more of The Thinker this season. Bring it on!

Meanwhile, Caitlin practically agrees to re-join Team Flash, but she hasn’t tossed Killer Frost to the side yet. We get a taste of Killer Frost when she kicks that guys butt at the bar. But she seems to be struggling with her identity and transitioning between Caitlin Snow and Killer Frost. The “not again” implies that she might not know how to control her alias Killer Frost from revealing herself at any given time. Something to look forward to this season! Keep an eye out for Caitlin/Killer Frost.

Well, in conclusion, it’s so great to see The Flash has been reborn and reunited with Iris. I can’t help but to be a little sceptical of whether The Flash is back to his true self. It’s clear the Speed Force changed him, but I’m curious as to how.

Notable mention:

When Cisco encrypted some of the symbols Barry had been writing and they translated to THIS HOUSE IS BITCHIN’. I’m going to need some serious answers to that. But also, GOOD ONE GUYS!

Hall of Fame – Entrant #2 – Camren Bicondova – Selina Kyle.

Catwoman who’s secret identity is Selina Kyle has always had a very complexed relationship with Batman, a real love-hate relationship. As a Gotham city burglar, her appearance in a tight one piece outfit with a bullwhip for a weapon. Her character originally was shown as a super villain but since the 1990s Catwoman became the anti-heroine, often doing wrong things for the right reasons.
Selina Kyle’s earliest appearances in comics made her character thrive and started to feature in many media adaptations related to Batman. Three actress alone introduced her character to a large audience in the 1960’s, but it’s the most recent young Selina Kyle played by Camren Bicondova in the television series of Gotham I would like to nominate for Octobers DC World Hall of Fame.

Young Selina Kyle is the first character that we see in the pilot episode of Gotham, running along the rooftops and managing to steal a pint of milk from a citizen so she can feed her friends which just happen to be stray ally cats. As a teenage orphan and living on the streets she also uses the alias Cat. Her interest in Master Bruce happened when she witnesses his parents being murdered. Season one of Gotham episode 2 was titled “Selina Kyle” this really showed how Selina is very cautious around strangers especially when they are giving out free food. Selina gets arrested stealing fur coats from a top boutique in Gotham, she will only talk to Detective Gordon as she has some information on the Wayne murder. With having seen the murderer Jim decides to put her into protective custody at Wayne Manor. Alfred is not best pleased as he is having trouble looking after one teenager. Bruce and Selina become good friends, Bruce is just as fascinated with Selina as Selina is of Bruce. Alfred soon realises after a few rocky patches when he catches them food fighting maybe Selina is good for Bruce.
Life on the streets Selina makes look easy, as well as looking out for herself she keeps an eye on young Ivy Pepper. After she finds Ivy shivering with the cold and having a slight fever Selina has an idea to take her to Barbara Keens empty apartment, as she knows she has left Gotham. With agreeing to help Bruce find the man that stabbed Alfred, they find Reginald and he was sent as spy from Wayne Enterprises. When he threatens Bruce, Selina pushes him out the window so that Wayne Enterprises don’t know Reginald confessed to be a spy for them. Towards the end of season 1 one when Fish Mooney returned to Gotham Selina joined her gang. Fish took a liking to Selina makes her an assistant with a new make over and outfit.

At the start of season 2 it is shown that Selina is working for Oswald Cobblepot, after James Gordon comments during a meeting. Penguin says he just likes having a pet cat around the house. Also in this season we get to meet another one of Selina’s friends from life on the streets, Bridget Pike.  Selina witness how Bridget’s brothers verbally abuse her and she encourages Bridget to get out of town which unfortunately goes wrong. The coolest part for Selina was when she assisted Gordon, Bullock, Alfred and Penguin in rescuing Bruce from Theo Galavan and the Order of St.Dumas. She knew a way in, knocked out a guard so Selina could open a garage door to let them all in. Selina’s friendship with Bruce becomes strong again after he decides he wants to know how life on the streets work.

Selina encounters the Bruce doppelgänger in season 3, for a while she believes it’s the real Bruce until she starts a bar fight so she can sneak into the back office to steal the takings. She gets caught and Bruce doppelgänger comes in and beats them up. Selina sees that he wounded and she investigates even further seeing scars then realising its not the Bruce but a creation from Indian hill.

Selina starts dating Bruce and turns up really late for their dinner date at Wayne Manor while Bruce’s wants honesty Selina admits that’s it’s all pretty weird for her too. Selina agrees to help Bruce and Alfred gain access into a building because they would like to get an item that is protected by the Court of Owls. The scene between them is excellent it’s like a recreation from Indiana Jones and Mission Impossible. After this event while Alfred is fighting a Talon a stranger helps them out and which just happens to Selina’s mother Maria. Again Selina is let down by her Mother and Bruce discovers she came back after she finds out that her daughter is friends with the billionaire. Selina is angry at Bruce in his involvement in telling Maria to leave Gotham.

One of the best parts of  young Selina becoming Catwoman is when she has an argument with Bruce Doppelgänger who has returned after being switched by the Court of Owls. Selina needs to warn Alfred but Bruce doppelgänger advises against this and pushes her out of the window. Selina lies there motionless, as lots of cats start swarming over her body. This scene was done so well the recreation of the famous Batman Returns scene . Ivy goes looking for Selina at the Sirens and Tabitha tells her to check the hospital. Selina is in a coma, but with Ivy’s plant skills she heals her. When Selina awake her first thought is she needs to kill someone. Bruce doppelgänger and Selina are fighting at Wayne manor when Alfred intervines, then sees himself its not the real Bruce. Selina refuses to help Alfred find Bruce and Alfred tells her to leave and never to return to Wayne Manor. By the end of this season Selina is lost she wants to be somebody, better herself. She goes to the Sirens to find Barbara but Tabitha is there on her own, Tabitha asks what does she want. Selina isn’t sure but she does know she is tired of surviving, she wants more, to move up. Tabitha is instantly interested and asks if she is hungry, but Selina eyes Tabithas bullwhip on the bar. Tabitha urges her to give it a go she picks it up and breaks  the bottles first attmept, Tabitha can see Selina has talent and decides to mentor her. The growth of young Selina Kyle into our Catwoman has been absolutely fascinating her mature attitude is also very present in season 4, as the Sirens are forming.

Camren Bicondova is an impressive inspiring young lady now 18 years old, born in San Diego, California. Camren enrolled in her first dance class at 6 years old. She soon became an “Elite Protege” for the world- renowned PULSE Dance Conventation traveling the country. Camren’s  first big break arrived at the age of 12, when her all girl dance group “8 Flavahz” became the youngest ever to compete on MTV’s Americas Best Dance Crew, finishing second place and becoming a fan favourite. All the hard work paid off when she landed the role as Selina Kyle becoming the first ever actress to portray the younger version. Camren portrayal earned her a Saturn Award Nomination for Best Performance by a Young Actor in a Television Series. Camren still finds time to actively support several charitable causes close to her heart, including SEAL Legacy foundation, North Shore Animal League and most recently Global Citizen.   Camren is also very active on Instagram often giving the Gotham fans access to behind the scenes at Gotham and when she attends San Diego Comic Con.

Arrow Season 6 Premiere – Fallout

Depending on where you are at in the world, there has been plenty of time to get yourself in front of a screen and watch this episode. If you have yet to watch, STOP reading and go watch! It is one to not miss!

I have watched Arrow since the show first aired in 2012. Besides the season premiere when Black Canary (played by Caity Lotz) is killed, this was one of the best opening season episodes! Filled with plenty of action and surprise (not as big as that one, but there were still moments of shock), and enough to show how great the rest of the season will be!

Dead or Alive?

It was nice to quickly have the suspense of who in the team was still around (and some costume changes too), but heartbreaking to know who did not get off Lian Yu (so far). One shocker was Thea. She is found to look dead and with Oliver’s reactions to have found her in the state she is, it seems to be confirmed. But later in the episode we find that she is still alive and has been in a coma the past five months with no change. Black Siren was left for dead after Quentin shoots her while saving Dinah. She quickly goes after the team and takes a prototype weapon made by Curtis. Samantha, William’s mother, is able to find Oliver before dying. She has Oliver promise to be William’s father as she dies in his arms.

The episode brings up a lot about fatherhood. Slade, with the help from Oliver, finds information about his son and is off to Calgary to find him. Oliver helps Renee get another hearing for the custody of his daughter Zoe. And Oliver tries to keep his promise to be a father to William.

One moment in the episode Oliver consoles William after he has a nightmare finding that he blames him for Samantha’s death and not Adrian.  Oliver is clearly heartbroken and doesn’t know how to respond. He later tells William that he is not perfect but no matter what he would keep his promise and be there for him as a father.

Beginning Of Six

This season is sure to bring some curve balls everywhere. With not knowing fully who is alive or dead (Talia al Ghul, Nyssa al Ghul, Evelyn Sharp, and Digger Harkness), there are questions to be answered. Who is the head of the League of Assasins? (Malcom is dead. Who will be taking his place?) What prototype weapon did Black Siren take? And what is going to happen now that Star City has seen a picture of Oliver as the Green Arrow?

Best Moment

I love it went I see a cool effect or stunt. Like the boxing glove arrow, when Oliver takes out what looks like a compact but it’s the bow and it folds out in his hands, and just all the stunts period (love James Bamford and team!) This episode, the beginning has a great action sequence with the team fighting Alex Faust at the pier.  But before the action starts, we see two arrows making their mark and then Green Arrow makes his entrance by coming out of the water like he was paying homage to Aquaman. Couldn’t have asked for anything better than that opening!

Next episode October 19th!

Supergirl Season 3, Episode 1 Recap: The Girl of Steel

I’ve got two words for you, IDENTITY CRISIS. Supergirl premiered its third season with a powerful, very quotable first episode as well as a new Supergirl title treatment. Supergeeks rejoice!

Millions of viewers tuned in to see The Girl of Steel struggle with her identity and try to overcome heartbreak while being National City’s favourite superhero.

How about that (literally) dreamy opening sequence where we got a glimpse into a ‘perfect world’ for Kara Danvers. From sharing a moment with Mon-El (the lover she sent away at the end of Season 2. Ouch.), to embracing her mother. Talk about an opening to hit you right in the feels. Don’t lie, you cried too.

Well, it wasn’t all sunshine and roses. Dreamland was short-lived as the opening scene quickly cut to Supergirl hovering above the high-rise buildings of National City and listening in for any trouble she could dive right into. Trouble didn’t take long to find. Maggie Sawyer and Alex Danvers were right in the thick of a high-speed car chase with a semi-trailer and bad guy, Robert DuBois, whom they identify later on in the episode. You could feel the Sanvers fandom lose its breathe for a good few seconds as an insane (but very cool), large gun blaster was ready to fire at them. Supergirl to the rescue, of course. You can breathe again Sanvers fans. Breathe.

Back at the DEO, the crew are reunited and Supergirl means business. With no time to waste and no time for small talk (I’m looking at you Winn). You can sense her detachment from a mile away, especially after blowing off her own sister’s tasting for the wedding reception. How good was that dig from J’onn, “Come on Alex, your unrelenting seriousness is one of your best qualities”. Ouch. But we still love you Alex.

In this first episode of the season, we are introduced to Morgan Edge (Adrian Pasdar). The new bad guy of National City disguised as a hot-shot real estate mogul. Edge is on a mission to drive out the low-middle-income residents from the waterfront area, where the Supergirl statue is unveiled, and replace it with overpriced high rises. Typical bad guy thing to do. We’re onto you, Edge. Lena Luthor on the other hand is always ready for a challenge, putting Edge on blast in front of the city’s leaders. The award for most quotable bad-ass dialogue goes to Lena Luthor in this episode. Power to the strong female that she is. Slay girl.

Now, I must give a special shout-out to the Supergirl writers for Cat Grant’s speech as the new White House Press Secretary. Cat’s rant on the President believing in Global Warming and that the Earth is round because the President is not a moron IS-JUST-EVERYTHING. Well played Supergirl writers, well played.

It’s not long before Supergirl is back at it again chasing all the trouble she can. Clearly distracting herself as she tries to forget that devastating Season 2 finale. Is anybody really over it? I’m not. Kicking ass and saving the city post-breakup. Sigh. If only we could all deal with breakups this way.

Soon after they identified Robert DuBois, a mercenary by the codename Bloodsport, Supergirl was back in action. Tracking down Bloodsport at a secret building guarded by military personnel. Well, not that guarded considering by the time she flew there, the guards had been knocked out. Inside the building she has a choice to take down Bloodsport, who jumps out of a Daxamite Ship, or attend to an injured guard. Of course she chooses the guard. There’s our Kara.

James interrupts her by signalling the emergency beeper. Bad idea James. When Kara zooms over to CatCo to confront James, the conversation ends with Kara quitting CatCo and leaving her reporting life behind. Real smooth move James.

Meanwhile, the DEO has discovered that Bloodsport has stolen some serious equipment to cloak any vehicle (a submarine let’s say) so it can send a nuke right into the heart of National City. If you put two and two together, you’ll realise that Bloodsport is obviously working with new baddie Morgan Edge. But we could smell that evil duo brewing from a mile away.

Let’s talk Danvers sisters. Alex and Kara share an intense, unforgettable scene in Kara’s apartment. Alex storms in to tell Kara the ‘pity party’ is over and she needs to get her true self back in the game. This is actually quite an intense scene for the pair and I give props to the writers for the beautiful dialogue exchanged between the two. Kara has clearly bottled up all “human” feelings regarding the loss of Mon-El, all the while struggling with whom her true identity is. Words were thrown around like “I’m not human” and “Kara Danvers was a mistake”. Then we all died a little inside.

Alex makes a quick switch to business mode as she briefs Kara on Bloodsport. Telling her to be there at the unveiling of her own statue. Before leaving Alex hit us right in the feels with “Kara Danvers is my favourite person. She saved me more times than Supergirl ever could. So just think about that while you’re trying to get rid of her.” Did I mention we all died a little inside?

If Alex trying to get through to Kara wasn’t enough, J’onn also tried his luck with a little one-on-one at the waterfront unveiling reminding Kara that she also has a human heart which is essential to part of her identity. Reality check Kara. Get it together GF!

At the waterfront, during patrol, Maggie and Alex discuss their wedding over comms. Alex explains her hesitation to tie the knot with Maggie, and her reasoning is just the sweetest thing. The absence of Alex’s dad is giving her cold feet and making her second guess plans for a big wedding. Of course Maggie has some words to say and damn were they some sweet words. The Sanvers fandom (myself included) goes into meltdown. Actually, any scene with Alex and Maggie sends me into meltdown. Yes, guilty.

We are briefly introduced to a new character by the name Samantha (played by Supergirl newcomer Odette Annable). Samantha’s character will be important as we discovered she possesses some sort of super strength, saving her daughter from being trapped underneath a heavy steel girder. At first she’s introduced as a normal human, but I’m excited for the rest of the season assuming she transitions into the villain Reign.

Lena Luthor had some nice words to say about Supergirl after the unveiling of the statue. This was soon interrupted by an explosion rocking the waterfront. Bloodsport was back at it again, this time attacking from underwater in an invisible submarine. VERY COOL. But also not cool. Supergirl finds his heartbeat and plunges into the deep water (knowing very well she can’t breathe underwater). Where is Aquaman when you need him!

As another missile is fired from the submarine, Supergirl is knocked back by the blast and she drifts unconsciously underwater. But not for long. The sound of Mon-El’s voice brings Kara back to life and before you know it she submerges from the water, lifting a whole submarine above her head. Yes, Queen.

Some notable mentions:

Lena Luthor buys CatCo and convinces Kara to become a reporter again.

Supergirl warns Morgan Edge that all her attention is on him, before leaving him scared and abandoned on a container ship in the middle of the ocean. But that won’t be the last we see of him.

An alien ship activates underwater. Curious to see who or what is in the ship.

Alex asks J’onn to walk her down the aisle because she sees him as a father figure. I’m not crying, you are.

Finally, an ending I won’t forget because it terrified the hell out of me! We return to the opening dream sequence with Kara’s mother. Except this time, she turns around and her face turns into something from your worst nightmare and then some. Samantha also wakes up in a panic, ending the first episode of a promising new season.

What are your thoughts on the Season 3 premiere? Did episode 1 hit all the right notes for you?
