This book was an absolute joy to read. As someone who can barely draw a stickman, I have always had the utmost respect for people who can draw. The artists in this book are not just simply people who can draw though, they are artists in every sense of the word. They are creative minds who have taken concepts from words on a page and brought them to life.

All-Star Superman is one of my all time favourite comics and being able to read how Frank Quietly sets about drawing a comic like that is a wonderful treat. This book is full of artists that I am not likely to ever meet in person. The opportunity to read about the life of these artists, what makes them tick and what their creative process is was a real eye opener.

Almost every character in popular culture has been drawn by the artists in this book so no matter who your favorites are, there is something for everyone. If its Marvel, DC, 2000 AD, Vertigo these guys have drawn for them. William Simpson is an artist I have admired for many years having drawn some of my favorite characters like Rogue Trooper for 2000 AD and Hellblazer John Constantine for DC. What I did not know before reading this was that William has been a storyboard artists on the hit TV show Game of Thrones, another favorite of mine.

This book is full of inside knowledge that you would never know without sitting down and asking these amazing artists. That is exactly how it feels reading this book, that you are sat in the room with these legends and hearing them discuss their lives. This is not just a question and answer interview, this book is almost like a story in itself. The acccompaint of pictures in their creatives spaces and studios enhances your experience of being in the room.

If you want to find out who listens to Radio 4 while creating, who enjoys working from home so you have have ‘no pants Thursday’ or learn what it takes to draw the Joker then pick up a copy of this book.

This is the first in a series focusing on artists at work in a variety of mediums and industries, Masters of Comics offers a glimpse behind the veil, shining new light on the artistic process. It’s the ultimate backstage pass for comic fans, as well as a wonderful learning tool for aspiring artists wishing to learn from the greats.
