DIRECTOR’S CHAIR

Welcome to the newest feature here at DC World. For Director’s Chair we will be putting you in the hot seat and asking questions all about your cinema experiences and what you would like to see next for DC films.

I put it to the DC World team members first to get the ball rolling and first up is Connor (@BCRD_). I want to thank Connor for being the first to take a seat in the Director’s Chair and giving us some great answers.

If you would like to be involved and have a go then please get in touch with me on Twitter and send a message to @thefilmbloke. I look forward to hearing from you.

It’s always better to see a film on the big screen, how often do you get to the Cinema and what is your snack of choice?

I don’t get chance to go as often as I used to. Nowadays my cinema visits are reserved for Comic Book movie releases only with the odd film from a different genre thrown in every now and then. My snack of choice is nachos, they’re noisy but that’s why I eat them during the adverts and trailers.

Outside of Comic Book films what other films and franchises do you love?

Franchises include LOTR, Underworld, Universal Monsters and genre wise I’d say mostly action and adventure!

It’s fair to say that critics weren’t blown away by Justice League but since then the likes of Wonder Woman, Aquaman and Shazam have all helped to get the DCEU back on track. What are your thoughts on the DCEU so far?

So far I’ve enjoyed every film in the DCEU in their own way. They each have their ups and downs and I can honestly say some of them are less than I expected but overall I’ve enjoyed all of them, but my issue is with the studios not granting enough freedom to the directors and other members of the creational team behind these films. They need to listen more to the people who know what the fans really want.

Have you seen Birds of Prey and if so what did you think of it?

I LOVED Birds Of Prey. Honestly, I do think it was still a little Harley centric but not necessarily in a bad way because let’s face it, she’s the selling point of every film she’s going to be in now and Margot Robbie is Harley incarnate, but that’s not to say the other badass characters didn’t get their time to stand out because each one of them is memorable in their own way and I can’t wait to see what the future brings for these ladies!

With Wonder Woman 84, Suicide Squad 2, The Batman and possibly the Flash movie all in the works how excited are you for the future of DC cinema?

Whether it’s a big budget Hollywood flop or a low budget masterpiece I will always be excited for new DC films. I’m someone who is simply glad to see these things come alive from page to screen and it doesn’t need to be perfect, but it needs to be done in a way that fits the characters you’re trying to portray.

Henry Cavill’s Superman almost seems to be the forgotten man of DC. The fans definitely want him back. What are your thoughts on a Man of Steel 2?

I’m not sure on this one. It’s hard to say. Affleck is the only one that seems to be truly done with the DCEU, so it will be strange to see any further development with Cavill, Gadot, Momoa, Miller and Fisher without Affleck.

A simple one now… Keaton, Bale or Affleck and why?

It’s controversial as always with these questions and answers but I’ll have to go with Affleck. Keaton was always my favourite but as soon as Ben got cast, knowing his history with Kevin and reading DC comics especially Batman, I knew he’d nail it and he did. A grizzled veteran vigilante who’s tired of the world and has suffered far too much to give a damn anymore, realises that the alien he despised was the man Batman should have been. It’s poetic and Affleck would have made a great solo Batman film if that hadn’t gone to pot. Everything from his portrayal of both Bruce Wayne and Batman, to his costume, Batmobile and fighting style was in my personal opinion, close to perfect.

Now it’s time to take your seat in the Directors Chair…

Warner Brothers approach you with a huge budget of $300million to make a film that fits in with Wonder Woman, Aquaman and Shazam but which DC character are you making your movie about and how will the film play out?

Green Arrow. It’s gonna take some time before we get over the TV series Arrow, but I think a big screen Green Arrow film is just around the corner. Give or take a few years. My idea for a great Green Arrow film would include a story from ‘Sound of Violence’ written by Kevin Smith. Now, the villain Smith created for this story, is one even Smith says couldn’t work in an actual film or TV show because his name is Onomatopoeia and all he does for dialogue is make sounds like the creaking of a door or the bang of an explosion but personally, I think with the right actor portraying him, it would be a creepy, sadistic character who GA tracks down for the murders of non powered heroes, including those closest to GA.

Of course your film is a huge success and WB want more, only this time it’s a much lower budget and they want a film that will fit easily in to the world of Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker. Which Hero or Villains are you going for and what happens?

I would make a dark gritty psychological horror film based on Jonathan Crane a.k.a The Scarecrow. Throughout the film we see Jonathan experiment more with his earlier work on fear and its effects, testing his research on patients at Arkham and eventually going mad with power whilst being bullied and mistreated by his peers and those around him. We’d also get a glimpse of his own fears, just to give it a little taste of sympathy before turning him villainous.

Your second film cleans up at awards season and now Marvel want to be involved and they offer you any of their characters to put in a DC film. Who are you bringing over and what team up or face off would we see with our DC favourites?

This is a tough one. There have been some great Marvel/DC team ups in comics in the past such as Batman and Punisher which of course makes for great moral drama since Batman doesn’t kill and must work with a man who does nothing but kill. Then of course there’s always Daredevil who I reckon could match with someone like GA for looking out for the little guy. Or if we want to go super we could always have Wonder Woman team up with She Hulk. With her strength she’d fit right in with the Amazonians.

And that’s it, the first edition of Dc Worlds Directors Chair. Again I want to thank Connor for some brilliant answers. I love his ideas for a Scarecrow film which would be amazing to see.

Don’t forget if you want to be involved just send a message to @thefimbloke on Twitter and we will get it sorted out. Thanks for reading.
